Bio or Research Areas:
Jan Leighley received her Ph.D. from Washington University in 1988. Her research examines questions pertinent to American political behavior, particularly political mobilization and voter turnout. She has published widely in the leading journals of the discipline, including the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science and the Journal of Politics. Her most recent book is Strength in Numbers: The Political Mobilization of Racial and Ethnic Minorities (Princeton University Press), and she has also published an undergraduate textbook, Media and Politics (Houghton Mifflin). From 2001 to 2005, she served as editor of the American Journal of Political Science. Her current research focuses on the determinants and consequences of voter turnout in the U.S., the effects of various state policies regarding election administration and voter registration, and how the racial context structures individuals'; involvements in politics.
