Bio or Research Areas:
John A. Garcia received his Ph.D. from the Florida State University in 1971. He teaches courses in American government especially in the subfields of minority/Latino group politics, urban government and public policy, and political behavior and mobilization. Professor Garcia's research interests include the acquisition and utilization of social capital for political engagement, coalition formation among minority communities; and the social construction of ethnic and racial identity and political involvement. His research has resulted in the participation in the National Chicano Survey (1979), the Latino National Political Survey (1989-90), and Latino National Survey (LNS) (2005-06).

His work has appeared in Social Science Quarterly, American Political Science Review, National Journal of Political Science, Publius, International Migration Review, and other refereed journals, as well as many chapters in edited volumes. His more recent book, Latino Politics in America: Community, Culture and Interest, is scheduled for a second edition in 2008 by Rowman and Littlefield Press. He has completed a research project funded by the Russell Sage Foundation on the intersection of immigrant status and racial and ethnic identity. Currently, his primary focus lies with three book projects (along with co-PI’s) regarding the examination of political behaviors and attitudes and bases of a political community for Latinos in the U.S.
